Activities on Forest Rights

This is a core area where the cooperation of authorities is lacking. The conflict between the tribe and the forest department is widespread. Foremost of all, we demand rights on forest land in accordance with the provisions of the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006. In fact, this has been the core demand ever since Mahasweta Devi’s movement commencing in 1983. We have been pursuing with the district and state administration for quite long. However, comprehensive action is still awaited from the authorities. We are working in this field to get the due forest land rights to this community per the Community Forest Rights Act. More than 1700 applications made under the Forest Rights Act 2006, but very few have received patta till date.

PBKSKS Organises many training workshops on forest rights. During the workshop, they discussed about the FRA 2006, the process of filing a forest rights application and why we should claim it. Many Block-level meetings are done with BDOs. In Jabla village forest committee was formed at the village level which is permitted by BDO, Puncha. After special Permission from BDO, Manbazar in December 2024 total of 48 Forest rights applications were filled from 2 villages which is submitted at the BDO office, in Manbazar. However, no response received from the BDO yet. We are trying to convince other BDOs and govt. administration but the problem on filing forest rights application is still the same.
