Discover the Art of Sabar Handicrafts

Promoting Sabar handicrafts is an important initiative undertaken by PBKSKS to support the artisans and showcase their traditional skills. Here are some key activities and achievements related to the promotion of Sabar handicrafts:

PBKSKS approached and invited Mr. Rajat Nanda (IPS), the District Magistrate (DM) of Purulia, to visit Akarbaid Village for the marketing and exhibition of Sabar handicrafts. During his visit, Mr. Rajat Nanda not only observed the Sabar handicrafts but also took the opportunity to visit the agricultural fields of the Sabar community. He engaged in a meeting with the villagers to discuss various issues and concerns they might have. By involving the DM in the marketing and exhibition of Sabar handicrafts, PBKSKS aimed to showcase the artistic skills and cultural heritage of the Sabar community. This initiative also provided an opportunity for the DM to interact directly with the villagers, understand their needs, and address any challenges they might be facing. The presence of Mr. Rajat Nanda, an IPS officer serving as the DM, further emphasized the importance given to the promotion of Sabar handicrafts and the overall development of the Sabar community. It also highlighted the collaborative efforts between PBKSKS and the local administration to support and uplift the socio-economic conditions of the Sabar community in Purulia.

Sabar handicrafts documentary: A documentary highlighting Sabar handicrafts was made by SDO, Manbazar Mr. Anuj Pratap Singh and shared with the Tribal Secretary, Smt. Choten Dhendup Lama( IAS), Government of West Bengal, to create awareness about the craft.

GEO Tag recognition: In October 2022, Sabar Handicrafts received GEO Tag recognition from the Government of India during the convocation program of Handicrafts in Hyderabad. Four villages, namely Akarbaid, Maldih, Pundru, and Kelardih, were listed under this tag, signifying the handicrafts' unique identity and geographical origin.

Participation in exhibitions: PBKSKS with the artisans participates in various exhibitions and fairs in West Bengal and other states like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, where they showcase to promote their handicrafts and sell Sabar handicrafts.

Handicrafts training: Training programs were conducted in villages to build the capacity of women artisans and make them self-reliant. Training on sewing techniques and leaf plate making was carried out to enhance their skills.

Inauguration of a permanent stall: In January 2023, a permanent Sabar handicrafts stall was inaugurated at Kolkata Dakkhinewswar Mahamandalam by Ranjit Mullik, a well-known actor from West Bengal. This stall provides a dedicated space for showcasing and selling Sabar handicrafts. Another permanent Sabar handicrafts stall was done by Bali Kamarpara "Nirvik” at Bali 'Shramjivi Pathshala'. This fair takes place on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month, and it will be open from 3:30 pm to 8 pm. The exhibition and sale of Sabar handicrafts provide a platform to showcase the unique artistic skills and craftsmanship of the Sabar community. It's an excellent opportunity for visitors to appreciate and purchase these exquisite handmade products.

Recognition at cultural events: Sabar handicraft artisans participated in Tusu Chau Dal and received the first prize of 10,000 rupees for their creative art. Sabitri Sabar, Sukhada Sabar (from Akarbaid), and Baishaki Sabar (from Bandih) were the awardees.
